Hilla Shapira is a wearable and textile artist originally from Tel Aviv, Israel, currently based in Brooklyn, NY. Her work explores the relationship between everyday design and body regimen. Through the creation of functional, mundane objects, she questions design norms and the political dimensions of daily objects. Shapira’s practice moves fluidly between textiles, wearables, installation, and performance, inviting viewers to reconsider the connection between the designed world and the human body.

Her work has been exhibited at Art Basel (Miami, FL), the Philadelphia Museum of Jewish Art (Philadelphia, PA), the Detroit LGBTQ+ Biennale (Detroit, MI), NY Textile Month (Brooklyn, NY), Jerusalem Design Week (Jerusalem, IL), NY Jewelry Week (Brooklyn, NY), Neve Schechter Gallery (Tel Aviv, IL), Hansen House (Jerusalem, IL), the Textile Arts Center (Brooklyn, NY), and Wasserman Projects (Detroit, MI).

She has participated in artist residencies across the U.S. and Israel, including the Textile Arts Center WIP (Brooklyn, NY), Carrizozo Artist in Residence (Carrizozo, NM), Popps Packing (Hamtramck, MI), and the Neve Schechter Center (Tel Aviv, IL). Shapira holds a BFA in Fashion Design from the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design (Jerusalem, IL) and an MFA in Fiber from Cranbrook Academy of Art (Bloomfield Hills, MI).

Her work has been featured in publications including Hyperallergic, NY Jewish Week, Metalsmith Magazine, Portfolio Magazine, Haaretz, and The Jerusalem Post.
