      <image:caption>Hilla Shapira is a wearable and textile artist originally from Tel Aviv, Israel, currently based in Brooklyn, NY. Her work explores the relationship between everyday design and body regimen. Through the creation of functional, mundane objects, she questions design norms and the political dimensions of daily objects. Shapira’s practice moves fluidly between textiles, wearables, installation, and performance, inviting viewers to reconsider the connection between the designed world and the human body. Her work has been exhibited at Art Basel (Miami, FL), the Philadelphia Museum of Jewish Art (Philadelphia, PA), the Detroit LGBTQ+ Biennale (Detroit, MI), NY Textile Month (Brooklyn, NY), Jerusalem Design Week (Jerusalem, IL), NY Jewelry Week (Brooklyn, NY), Neve Schechter Gallery (Tel Aviv, IL), Hansen House (Jerusalem, IL), the Textile Arts Center (Brooklyn, NY), and Wasserman Projects (Detroit, MI). She has participated in artist residencies across the U.S. and Israel, including the Textile Arts Center WIP (Brooklyn, NY), Carrizozo Artist in Residence (Carrizozo, NM), Popps Packing (Hamtramck, MI), and the Neve Schechter Center (Tel Aviv, IL). Shapira holds a BFA in Fashion Design from the Bezalel Academy of Arts and Design (Jerusalem, IL) and an MFA in Fiber from Cranbrook Academy of Art (Bloomfield Hills, MI). Each piece was changed by a little gesture and got a new definition and sexual perspective. I am interested in the function and its connection to gender, how is sexuality inherent in the design itself? Who benefits from the design? The body or the gaze? I deal with questions about sexuality and gender roles. Every choice I make matters in the redesign of the objects. By changing just one line in the pattern of a tank top or a tidy whitey, the object has a different manner. The gaze is reversed, the function and the consumer are now questionable. The little shifting in the construction process changes the context.</image:caption>

      <image:title>Protection Wall - PROTECTION WALL</image:title>
      <image:caption>Soft Talismans, 2019  cotton, sock, synthetic fur, terry cloth, poly-fill Tiny: 5 x 5 cm // Small: 10 x 10 cm // Medium: 11 x 20 cm // Large: 14 x 30 cm This is a series of soft talismans that are made by sewing, machine embroidery and stuffing. The shapes are taken from different contexts and cultures like Hamsa, pads, and pubic wigs. They have different functions, but all of them are carried on the body for protection. Each object has external and internal shapes. I am creating dialogues between the objects by repeating the interior shapes and playing with their variations. The origin of the Hamsa symbol is not certain, it can relate to different religions and cultures, particularly in Asia. Judaism and Israeli culture use this symbol, and it is part of the mainstream view. The function is protection and the object is wearable or displayed at the entrances of houses and businesses. Hamsa means 5 in Arabic, 5 fingers. The external shape represents the hand and the internal shape represents the eye that protects from the evil eye. In some cases the Hamsas will cover the whole wall for protection from evil demons.  The triad of lips, eye and vulva have the same abstract graphic shape. I play on this gray zone by multiplication, missing and adding lines. I am deconstructing the shapes and the body parts to ask questions about the hierarchy of the organs, and the sexuality of objects. What organs are used for blessing and what are used for cursing? I explore how small gestures shift the meanings of objects, and what are the cultural differences between organs and genitals?</image:caption>

The performer brushed the mirror hair repetitively with broken combs for one hour. The sound is 2 voices reading text in Hebrew and English-- a poem by Yona Wallach ‘Hebrew’ and ‘Boy you are my girlfriend’.  Brushing hair is a daily action that distinguishes gender roles. The action is a knowledge taught between women. Language conveys knowledge taught between people. All of those unquestionable, casual, actions educate us toward a culture of binaries.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Installation, Performance and Wearable Objects, 2021 Cotton, Polypill, Copper, Jerusalem stone Collaboration with Naama Levit Performer - Æirrinn Ricks Videography + Editing - Maya Baran This installation displays an arrangement of objects and shapes, mostly ones of the domestic environment, and free standing forms that were collected in the streets of New York. They are coated in a layer of beige/off-white gypsum and composed together to create an environment, a site within a site. It stands on a platform on the rooftop of BKMW studio, surrounded by vents, boilers, electricity cords and the building’s sides.  The performance is an ongoing repetitive spectacle of movement and interactions around the installation as the performer activates the objects and materials.  We started this project thinking about the intimacy we have with the objects we use every day- garments, key chains, and jewelry. These objects carry on the body and change through time and context. That mode of change is the essence of our project, everything specific and nonspecific at the same time. Fluidity of forms and functions, shapes that imply a utilitarian purpose to suggest occurrences or a ritual. The textile is designed for attachment- a quilt and loops that suggest interchange. The metal pieces are part of the textile and can be detached and attached  to each other and the textile itself . Through displacement of materials and reconstruction of functional objects the aim is to question the common design order and the specification of things. The video is suggesting different possibilities of interactions. This project was made during the Designers in Residence 2021 at EMMA Kreativzentrum Pforzheim, Germany and in collaboration with Brooklyn Metal Works, Brooklyn, NY.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Installation, Performance and Wearable Objects, 2021 Cotton, Polypill, Copper, Jerusalem stone Collaboration with Naama Levit Performer - Æirrinn Ricks Videography + Editing - Maya Baran This installation displays an arrangement of objects and shapes, mostly ones of the domestic environment, and free standing forms that were collected in the streets of New York. They are coated in a layer of beige/off-white gypsum and composed together to create an environment, a site within a site. It stands on a platform on the rooftop of BKMW studio, surrounded by vents, boilers, electricity cords and the building’s sides.  The performance is an ongoing repetitive spectacle of movement and interactions around the installation as the performer activates the objects and materials.  We started this project thinking about the intimacy we have with the objects we use every day- garments, key chains, and jewelry. These objects carry on the body and change through time and context. That mode of change is the essence of our project, everything specific and nonspecific at the same time. Fluidity of forms and functions, shapes that imply a utilitarian purpose to suggest occurrences or a ritual. The textile is designed for attachment- a quilt and loops that suggest interchange. The metal pieces are part of the textile and can be detached and attached  to each other and the textile itself . Through displacement of materials and reconstruction of functional objects the aim is to question the common design order and the specification of things. The video is suggesting different possibilities of interactions. This project was made during the Designers in Residence 2021 at EMMA Kreativzentrum Pforzheim, Germany and in collaboration with Brooklyn Metal Works, Brooklyn, NY.</image:caption>

The visual language is taken from Jewish iconography, then transformed into soft objects combined with fundamental Jewish Hebrew texts. Through redesigning, I suggest inclusive religious discourse and question sexuality taboos. The pieces raise questions about the language hierarchies of blessing and cursing and the binary separation between organs and genitals.       <image:caption>2024 Performance and Wearable Objects Cotton, Polypill, Copper, Silk, Plastic Buckles Collaboration with Naama Levit This is a proposal for a speculative exploration of the mundane act of preparing a meal for oneself. The work encompasses performative actions, utensils, and wearable objects. During the performance, the objects will be activated in the preparation of a sandwich. Each piece is designed for a specific purpose: spreading, scooping, picking, and sifting. There will be 4 spoons/tools, each tailored to its unique function. The wearable piece serves to carry all the tools and produce needed. The intention of the action is to emphasize a single moment, challenging the perception of time that prioritizes efficiency. Preparing a meal for oneself is a mundane and familiar act. By focusing on this daily ritual, we aim to find appreciation for the small details and highlight the value of care for oneself. Keep it to yourself is an experimental project where I create clothes and give them to people in my community. The aim is for the garments to live outside of the white cube. The clothes are documented by the wearers and the pictures published on an Instagram page. “Keep it to yourself” uses the body as a physical ambassador, and Instagram as a gallery. The patterns that I use are “basic” western garments like t-shirts, tank tops, and tidy whities. Through these  seemingly simple designs, I subvert obvious boundaries by changing transparency, color, and length.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Performance, 2020 Collaboration with Naama Levit Photographer — Ray Im Fermentory was a participatory performance that invited people to bring their leftover materials for preservation. The performance was conducted as an assembly line, divided into three stations; reception, preservation, and registration.  Each person's scraps were preserved with a salt and vinegar solution and suitable spices for their specific mixture. This project asked viewers to reexamine material use and consumption. By choosing to reference both kitchen and laboratory environments, we emphasized and exposed everyday materials and their properties.</image:caption>

      <image:caption>Performance, 2018 Collaboration with Naama Levit Photographer — Dominic Palarchio “Stream food” is an ongoing experimental project in which I collaborate with Naama Levit. It incorporates performance, objects, costumes, documentation, and food. The project contains a few scenarios happening simultaneously: Naama is preparing and assembling food live in front of the audience, the making process is being filmed and projected onto a nearby wall, the end product, hence the food, is captured on a phone camera and uploaded immediately onto a custom Instagram account. It is all happening instantaneously; the virtual and the physical overlap, there is live action and screened action; tangible and abstract converge at once. The audience is invited to participate by eating the food, watching the live action, viewing the live stream video feed, and through their own devices on Instagram.</image:caption>
